CUPE Local 4731 received this letter (CDLC Letter to Affiliates) from the Calgary & District Labour Council (CDLC) about the recent ending of the teachers’ strike in Alberta. The strike was over smaller class sizes, more educational assistants, and support for students with complex needs.
While the Government of Alberta ended the strike using the Notwithstanding Clause, there are ways our members can help:
1. Support Public Schools Funding Campaign
- Each union, corporation, or individual can donate up to $4,600. (If one CUPE local donates, others cannot.)
- Learn more: Elections Alberta – Contributions
- Sign the petition or volunteer to collect signatures: Fund Public Schools
2. Support Recall Campaigns (Optional for Members)
- Current campaigns: Calgary-Bow and Airdrie East.
- Unions should not donate unless located in the riding. Members can participate individually.
- Calgary-Bow: Sign, donate, volunteer
- Airdrie East: Sign, donate, volunteer
- Check your MLA here: Streetkey – Find Your MLA
Other recall efforts are beginning in several Calgary ridings. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
